What Labor-Only Moving Means (and When It’s the Right Choice)

The most common confusion we hear starts with a single word: movers. Many people book a labor-only crew and expect a truck to pull up with them. It won’t. Labor-only moving means you hire the people and the know-how, and you bring everything else. That is not a catch. It is exactly what makes the service flexible, and for the right move it is the smartest way to do it.

Here is what labor-only includes, what it doesn’t, and how to tell whether it fits your move in Greater Boston.

What you provide

On a labor-only job, the truck and the materials are on your side. That means:

  • The moving truck, rented and parked before the crew arrives. We do not drive the customer’s rental truck, so you or someone you trust will be behind the wheel.
  • All packing materials: moving blankets, stretch wrap, packing paper, tape, boxes, mattress bags and TV boxes.
  • Your belongings, already packed. Everything personal should be in boxes or bags before we get there.

Most truck rental locations also sell or rent these materials, so it is worth adding them when you reserve the truck instead of hunting for them the night before.

What the crew provides

Our crew brings the part you can’t rent: people who know how to lift, carry and load. Every crew arrives with basic hand tools and dollies. The service covers:

  • Loading and unloading your truck, container or storage unit.
  • Disassembling and reassembling furniture.
  • Rearranging furniture inside your home.
  • Packing assistance, when you request it ahead of time.

Loading is where experience shows. A well-loaded truck uses every foot of space, keeps heavy pieces low and stops things from shifting on the road. That matters on any drive, and even more on Boston streets.

When labor-only is the right choice

Labor-only makes sense when the heavy lifting is the problem and the rest is under control:

  • Local moves with a rental truck. You drive. We load at one end and unload at the other.
  • Moving containers. U-Box and PODS containers have to be loaded tight and balanced, and that is where a trained crew makes the difference.
  • Storage transfers. Into, out of or between storage units.
  • A tighter budget. You pay for crew time, not for a truck and materials you may already have.
  • Moves inside the same home or building. Rearranging rooms or taking furniture to a new unit down the hall.

When it isn’t, or when it needs more planning

Labor-only is not the answer for every move, and it is better to say so before you book:

  • You need someone to drive. We don’t drive rental trucks. On a long-distance move, the driving is on you or on the company you hire for the transport. We can still load at the start and unload at the finish.
  • You don’t have time to pack. Here the answer isn’t no. Belongings need to be packed before the crew starts loading, but packing assistance is available upon request. Ask for it when you book, so it is part of the plan and not a surprise on the day.
  • You have specialty items. Pianos, safes, marble furniture, glass furniture, oversized items and major appliances must be declared in advance. Tell us when you book so we can plan for them before moving day. If you have one of these, our guide on how to move a piano, antique or high-value item is a good place to start.

How billing works

We would rather you know the rules before moving day than discover them on the invoice:

  • Hourly, with a two-hour minimum.
  • The clock starts when the crew starts working.
  • Time is rounded up to the next full hour.
  • More time needs your approval. If the job needs to run longer, we ask you before continuing.

If you booked through U-Haul Moving Help, you will receive a Moving Help payment code before the move. Give it to the crew only after the job has been completed to your satisfaction. If additional hours are needed, they must first be approved through the Moving Help platform, and only then do we request the code. For jobs booked directly with us, we accept Zelle, Venmo, cash, and credit card when available.

Rates vary by location and service scope. You can see availability and pricing for your area on our Moving Help profile.

Protection: what we’re responsible for and what we’re not

This is the part worth reading twice, so here it is in plain words.

Magno Moving provides basic labor-only moving services. Our crew handles every item with care and professionalism. Even so, Magno Moving is not responsible for damage to furniture, personal belongings, buildings, vehicles or property during the move.

Because you provide the truck and the packing materials, the quality of those materials matters. We strongly recommend proper blankets, stretch wrap and boxes, and a mattress bag for every mattress. If you want additional protection, purchase SafeMove or SafeLoad coverage through U-Haul Moving Help before the move.

What to have ready before the crew arrives

A labor-only move goes fastest when the crew can start lifting the minute they walk in. Before they arrive:

  1. The truck or container is parked and open, as close to the door as the street allows.
  2. Blankets, wrap, tape and mattress bags are on site, not still in your car.
  3. Every box is closed and taped, and every bag is tied.
  4. TVs are in TV boxes and mattresses are in mattress bags.
  5. Specialty items were declared when you booked.
  6. Hallways, stairs and the path to the truck are clear.
  7. Someone who can make decisions, and approve extra time if needed, is on site.
